Ace Odisha sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick is all set to undergo a five-month-long advance training stint at the Racers Track Club in Jamaica, under the guidance of Glen Mills, the coach of Olympic champion Usain Bolt. Mallick, who won the men`s 200m gold in the National Open Athletics Championship at Ranchi earlier in September, is likely to leave for Jamaica on January 12.
The much-needed advance training programme has been arranged thanks to a financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. MCL CMD, A N Sahay handed over the cheque to Mallick at function here today and wished him greater success in the future.
Chess prodigy Saina Salonika, who won the under-10 girls` title in the World Youth Championship last week at Al-Alin in UAE, was also felicitated on the occasion. Last year, MCL had provided an incentive of Rs 50,000 to Saina after she became the youngest Woman Candidate Master of the state.
Meanwhile, city-based KIIT International School announced to provide free education to Saina as part of its sports promotion programme. KIIT founder Achyuta Samant on Tuesday made the announcement at a function, where Saina and international woman sprinter Dutee Chand, a student of KIIT Law School, were felicitated.
KIIT earlier provided a financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to Saina to enable her participate in the World Youth Chess Championship.
